Montreal, Canada (FIVB newswire) - Canadians Ahren Cadieux and Mark Heese survived a three-setter in their second match here Thursday to lead eight teams from eight countries into the third-round of the men’s winner’s bracket for this week’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour stop at Stade Uniprix in Jarry Park.
The eighth-seeded Cadieux and Heese, who are now guaranteed a ninth in the US$400,000 Montreal Open, challenge reigning Olympic champions and top-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil in the featured winner’s bracket match to start play Friday as double gender SWATCH Beach Volleyball event continues through Sunday when the final two teams compete for the $32,000 first-place prizes.
Emanuel and Ricardo rebounded from their lowest FIVB finish (25th) last week in Norway to defeat teams from Canada and Switzerland Thursday to advance to their third SWATCH meeting with Cadieux and Heese in the first of four third-round winner’s bracket matches Friday.
Cadieux and Heese, who are 0-2 against the Brazilians, defeated 25th-seeded Canadian rivals Jason Kruger and Wes Montgomery 21-19 and 21-15 in their first match Thursday before out-lasting 24th-seeded Jackson Henriquez and Igor Hernandez of Venezuela 21-23, 21-18 and 16-14 in 83 minutes.
